"The Military is at War, America is at the Mall"...or the Olympics, Apparently

I think it is unseemly for President Bush to be at the Olympics, frolicking with the creepy Chinese president and beaming all over the place.  I don't know whose quote I used for my post title, but it is certainly true.  I've heard no mention of our military from the blatherers at the Olympics--granted, I'm not watching it all--and am I surprised?  Well, no, it's NBC after all, but it would have been a fine thing to hear President Bush say,  "I cannot in good conscience attend the Olympics in a country with the appalling human rights record that China has, nor can I even begin to find enjoyment in such frivolous pursuits when our brave men and women of the U.S. military are engaged in the dangerous and noble work of protecting our country from harm and trying to rid the world of terrorism."  Wouldn't that have been something?  Of course, it'd also be fine if he said, "Because of China's alarming attempts to build its military might on our dime, and its refusal to be accountable for all the harm it does its own citizens, as well as the harm it means to do us, we have decided not to buy another poisonous toy or cheap piece of crap from that country. Starting NOW."
Wake up America.  While our fight with the terrorists is easier to see, the fight with China may turn out to be infinitely more serious.  They are about to own us, if they don't already, and the first thing they want to do when they feel they can is to squash us like a big fat bug.  They'll have no qualms about it either, for they are truly "Godless communists," another quote whose author I can't remember, and as such have no moral compass to guide them.  They will do whatever it takes, and kill whoever gets in their way.  WE are funding their goals by buying their garbage and pretending it's just about "trade."  Shame on us, and by "us" I mean our government.  We have no real control over what they do, but we could shut down the switchboard again if we all got busy and called, e-mailed, wrote letters and faxed the do-nothing-useful-Congress and told them what we think and what we want.
I don't know why anyone would join our military, considering the lack of respect the media and our government, and about half the citizens, have for them.  I don't know why anyone would join the Border Patrol either, since one can go to prison for doing one's job.  But these amazing people still DO join, still DO want to defend and protect us, and perform their tasks with enthusiasm and grit.  You'd think the President of their country, and the cowardly media drones, could manage to pay a bit of homage to that.
